history
Before European colonization, the Kuringai Aborigines inhabited the area around Pittwater. There are several mystical places of these Aborigines in the Avalon area.
The first European settler to settle in the Avalon area in 1833 was the Catholic priest John Joseph Therry. He bought land, built a church, and planned to start a town called Brighton. His attempt to set up a coal mine failed. In 1880 Therry died and the land was offered for sale and the area became orphaned.
In 1920, AJ Small bought the land, divided it and named it Avalon. He was referring to Avalon , a mythical place in Arthurian legend that is said to be near Glastonbury in Great Britain. Small built Palmgrove Park, a golf course, and planted Norfolk firs along the shoreline.
