As Northern Beaches (lit., Northern Beaches') refers to an area in the northern outskirts of the Australian city of Sydney in the state of New South Wales on the coast of the Pacific Ocean .

The term denotes both the entire coastal area northeast of the city and specifically the series of beaches there.

Location and landscape

The area extends in the south to the entrance of Port Jackson , Sydney's natural harbor, in the west to the entrance of Middle Harbor and in the north over the Barrenjoey Peninsula to the entrance of Broken Bay on Barrenjoey Headland .

Originally the area was inhabited by the Garigal or Caregal people and was part of a region called Guringai country . The Garigal National Park refers to this name inland.

The area known as Northern Beaches is usually equated with the Northern Beaches Statistical Subdivision , which fully includes the Local Government Areas of Manly , Warringah and Pittwater . According to the 2011 Australian Census, Northern Beaches is the most monoethical, white-populated area in Australia, in contrast to its more mixed neighboring regions, the North Shore ( north shore ) and Central Coast ( middle coast ).
