Avatar Press

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Avatar Press is an independent American comic book publisher founded in 1996 by William A. Christensen and based in Rantoul , Illinois . Avatar initially only published mini-series, but the product range has been greatly expanded since then. Avatar currently publishes several ongoing series, including Doctor Sleepless and Gravel , both directed by Warren Ellis .

Overview

Avatar Press has a remarkably wide range of “bad girl” comic series such as Pandora , which is considered by many to be a flagship character. Other "Bad Girl" comics are based on the characters Hellina, Lookers, The Ravening and Brian Pulido's Lady Death . As part of an effort to cement its reputation as a "bad girl" publisher, a number of well-known authors were given the opportunity to publish their own comics without any restriction on content. Authors who took up this offer include Frank Miller , Warren Ellis, Alan Moore and Garth Ennis , among others . Recently, the company has taken on the publication of comic adaptations of well-known science fiction and horror productions from film and television, for example RoboCop , The Night of the Living Dead and Friday the 13th. Avatar also has a strong web presence, started Warren Ellis' webcomic FreakAngels and the Comic news site BleedingCool , run by Rich Johnston.
