Ave Regina caelorum

Madonna by Jan van Eyck

The Ave Regina caelorum ( lat. ), In Medieval Latin also spread Ave Regina coelorum written, the Marian antiphon , in the Liturgy of the Hours of the Catholic Church in Lent either after Vespers or after Compline is sung - depending on which of these two Horen the last is to be celebrated in community. For the “Marian antiphons”, the term “antiphon” has become common, although it is actually not antiphonal chant in the strict sense, but rather hymn-like chants without reference to a psalm. The antiphon is named after the first three words of the Latin text. The oldest text can be found in the antiphonary of the Saint-Maur-des-Fossés abbey near Paris from the 12th century.

In the Praise of God the antiphon is printed under number 666.2. In the praise of God from 1975 , the root section under number 579 also contained a German translation from the Rottenburg hymn book from 1876 with a melody by Nikolaus Herman (1562) under the title “Maria, Himmelskönigin”, which was partially taken over into the separate parts of the new praise of God.

The text written in two- or three-syllable rhyming accent rhythms paroxytonal (emphasized on the penultimate syllable) eight-syllables reads:

Latin German

Ave Regina caelorum,
ave Domina Angelorum:
Salve radix, salve porta,
ex qua mundo lux est orta:
Gaude Virgo gloriosa,
super omnes speciosa:
Vale o valde decora,
et pro nobis Christum exora.

Ave, queen of heaven,
ave, the angel ruler.
Root from which salvation sprouted,
door that opened the light to us:
Rejoice, maiden full of honor,
rejoice above all blessings,
be greeted, the crown of heaven,
pray for us from your son.
