The Avenue C is a street in the Alphabet City of New York City's borough Manhattan , United States . The street is also called Loisaida Avenue .

location

The Avenue C is located between Avenue B and Avenue D . It starts on East Houston Street and ends on 23rd Street . It runs almost under FDR Drive from 18th Street .

Gentrification

Rents along Avenue C are rising rapidly and many long-established residents and businesses can no longer afford the rent increases. This has been typical of many areas in Manhattan since 1990.

Puerto Rican heritage

Avenue C is also called Loisaida Avenue in recognition of the neighborhood's Puerto Rican heritage. Loisaida is Spanglish and corresponds to the sound when New Yorkers from Puerto Rico or Latinos pronounce " Lower East Side ". The history of the neighborhood is portrayed in the book Selling The Lower East Side . Although the attribution of the neighborhood to the East Village is almost universally accepted, many long-time residents continue to view the area as part of the Lower East Side.

Community gardens

There are two fairly large community gardens on the corner of Loisaida and 9th Street that are maintained by the surrounding neighborhood. Their opening times vary with the seasons and the volunteer opportunities. They are accessible to everyone and there is no entry fee. Alcohol is also served here on special occasions - unlike in the other parks or public places in the city.

Local transport

Avenue C is served by the M9 and M14D ( MTA New York City Transit bus ) bus routes. The next bridge is the Williamsburg Bridge , which leads to Brooklyn and joins Delancey Street in Manhattan - just a few blocks south of East Houston Street. The next tunnel is the Queens Midtown Tunnel , which opens up Queens and flows into East 34th Street ( Midtown Manhattan ) in Manhattan . The East River Park is via pedestrian bridges at 10th Street , 6th Street and Houston Street to reach. A bicycle lane has existed on Avenue C since 1999.
