Aviv Aharon Shir-On (born October 31, 1952 near Tel Aviv ) is an Israeli diplomat .

Life

Aviv Shir-On was born in 1952 to a German Holocaust survivor. From 1971 to 1974 he did his military service and fought in 1973 in the Yom Kippur War as a tank officer in the Golan Heights , where he was wounded. He then studied international politics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem from 1974 to 1978 .

In 1978, Shir-On entered the diplomatic service. He served as a diplomat in Washington, DC and Germany , where, among other things, he was First Secretary of the Information Department at the Israeli Embassy in Bonn from 1981 to 1985 .

From 2003 to 2006 Shir-On was ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein . Most recently he worked as Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem in the field of media and public relations. In October 2009, Shir-On replaced Dan Ashbel as Israeli ambassador to Austria . In 2013 he ended his work as ambassador in Vienna. Since 2016 he has been the ambassador for Israel in The Hague , Netherlands .

Shir-On is married and has three children. In addition to English and German , he also speaks French .
