Avril Malley

Avril Malley , after marriage Avril Bray , (born April 15, 1957 ) is a former British judoka who won a bronze medal at world championships and five bronze medals at European championships.

Athletic career

Avril Malley mostly competed in the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 72 kilograms. At the European Championships in 1978 in Cologne, she won a bronze medal both in the light heavyweight division and in the open class. In the following year at the European Championships in Kerkrade in 1979 bronze followed in the open class. In 1980 she won again bronze medals in the light heavyweight division and in the open class at the European Championships in Udine . At the end of November 1980, the first World Championships for women took place in New York City . Malley lost in the quarterfinals of the light heavyweight division of the French Jocelyne Triadou , with wins in the hopes over Amy Kublin from the United States and Ines Kaspers from Spain, Malley won bronze.

In the next few years Malley was not successful in international championships. In 1986 she entered the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh for Northern Ireland and won the light heavyweight division against Ann Lucitt, who was fighting for England . Three months later she reached fifth place at the 1986 World Championships, her best placement since 1980. In 1987 in Essen , she was again fifth in the World Championship. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, judo competitions for women were offered as part of the demonstration competitions. Malley was eliminated, now starting as Avril Bray, in her first fight against the Japanese Yōko Tanabe .
