Axel WA Baltzer (born December 13, 1963 in Mönchengladbach ) is a German orthopedist.

Life

Baltzer studied medicine from 1984 to 1991 at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. He completed his specialist training in orthopedics from 1991 to 1997 at the Orthopedic University Hospital in Düsseldorf . He spent various stays abroad in Switzerland, England and the USA.

From 1997 to 1998 he undertook several research stays as a research fellow at the UPMC in Pittsburgh with Paul D. Robbins, Chris Evans and Freddie H. Fu on the topics of Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry and Orthopedic Surgey and Sports Medicine (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) and led was the first to carry out gene therapy with viral vectors on bones. In 1993, Baltzer was founded under K.-P. Schulitz is doing his doctorate on the subject of "Analysis of wing-changing operations on the hip joint using biomechanical optimization criteria". In February 2000, he completed his habilitation on the subject of "Animal experiments for the development of gene therapy for bone diseases", and since then Baltzer has been a private lecturer. Since 2004 he has been working in a group practice in Düsseldorf .

To this day he has also carried out molecular orthopedic research and application, including as President of the International Society of Molecular Orthopedics (ISMO).

Baltzer has published numerous scientific articles and is a reviewer and editorial board member for a number of different journals.

Since February 2004 he has been President of the International Society for Molecular Orthopedics (ISMO).

Patents and developments

Together with Juergen P. Arnold and the Florida-based company Arthrex, Baltzer developed surgical instructions with a focus on bone-cartilage transplantation from the ipsilateral knee for cartilage lesions of the talus and published them in the Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery in February 2005. The surgical instructions serve as a scientific guide Proof of the Osteochondral Autologous Transplant System (OATS) for small joints.

Furthermore, Baltzer holds three patents in the field of viral vectors ( Viral and non-viral vectors as vehicles for delivering transgenes for treating bone pathologies ).

Sports

From 1994 to 1997, Baltzer worked as an association doctor for the American Football Association Germany (AFVD) and from 2009 to 2012 he was co-team doctor for the national team of the women's beach volleyball team.

Honors

Between 1998 and 1999, Baltzer received four special honors. In 1998 he received the ESSKA Young Researchers Prize ( Nice ) and in the same year the Best Paper Award from the International Society for Fracture Repair ( Strasbourg ) and the prize for the best presentation in the research section of the German Society for Surgery ( Düsseldorf ). In 1999 he received the Gerhard Küntscher Prize in Berlin.
