Axel Heibel (born September 23, 1943 in Oberlahnstein ) is a German object artist .
Work and career
The main feature of Axel Heibel's work is the reduction and a wide range of different media possibilities. Since 1976 he has been creating book objects that were presented at Documenta 6 . To this day, he is fascinated by the idea of changing the pages of the book. He always tries to change the boundaries of the usual book form or to question them. In addition, he reflects on leafing through, reading and looking at in his books. The consistency of the scrolling is often changed or even hindered. The reader / viewer has to find different ways of looking and appropriating the book object.
The illustration on the right, the so-called “assemblage”, is not such, as it is a book object that was created from the individual sheets of the book block by cutting and folding. The individual sheets can be folded by the viewer, i. H. be constructed three-dimensionally. The book can be closed completely after viewing. In the first few years Heibel often used the folding of the book pages. As a result, the viewer / user is actively involved in the reading process.
The unique pieces show different approaches to painting , drawing , stamp printing , spraying, folding and cutting. The three-dimensional aspect of his books is in the foreground and shows through the changing interventions in the book block. He has also been using photography since the early 1980s .
At the same time, the artist dealt with reduced painting from 1975 to 1996. The effect and appearance of color and non-color has been his main topic since 1996. He translates the dialogue between light and color into wall objects that present the glow of reduced color and plasticity.

- Born in Lahnstein in 1943
- 1967 studies at the Werkkunstschule, Offenbach
- 1967–1969 Realization of monochrome, single and multi-surface folding objects made of cardboard
- 1968–1971 Object groups made of mostly transparent, uncoloured and also colored acrylic glass, the three-dimensional character of which can be varied in different constellations by changing the position of the individual elements of the same or related shape. Special attention is paid to the aspect of enlarging or reducing and the transparency of a sculpture and the inclusion of the space and the active viewer
- 1968–1972 studies at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Hamburg (painting, sculpture, film, photography)
- 1969–1974 Differently designed artistic spaces. At the same time, concept drawings for space spans or hanging sculptures that operate with the simplest means, soft, flexible materials: overall related to interiors: environments. By using soft materials, these three-dimensional structures can only exist or are created with the help of the suspension that keeps them “in shape”
- 1970 Experimental short films with numerical editing sequences
- 1970–1972 White and gray frame objects made of wooden strips with hinges. At first the changeability is in the foreground, later the static aspect becomes more important. At the same time colored drawings, inspired by the work on the objects
- 1973 Realization of seven plastic groups made of metal for public space: Kunstallee to the IGA in Hamburg
- 1973–1974 Room models and drawings: Realization in the dome of the Hamburger Kunsthalle in 1973
- 1975 move to Düsseldorf. Since then, occupation with painting: folding cloths, papers, transparent papers
- 1976 Start of work on book objects of various kinds. From 1981 on book objects with photographic material
- 1977 participation in documenta 6 in Kassel. Since then, multi-part folded cloths, inspired by the complexity of the books. The work on the folded cloths continued on the complex shape - as a reaction of the open form to the surrounding space
- 1981/82 stay in Paris for six months thanks to a grant from the Ministry of Culture in North Rhine-Westphalia; there numerous contacts and exhibitions in Paris, Toulouse and Rouen
- 1990–1995 work parallel to painting on small colored cardboard sculptures
- 1991–1993 teaching position at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences
- 1995–1996 occupied with three-layer drawings on cardboard that are slightly three-dimensional
- 1996 Start of occupation with plastic objects, which from 2000 onwards are divided into several parts and are designed in relation to space. The share of photography gained in importance from 2002
