Axel Vater (born June 19, 1949 in Görlitz ; † June 5, 2014 ) was a visual artist living in North Rhine-Westphalia . In 1975 he was honored with the Art Prize of the Artists at the Great Art Exhibition NRW Düsseldorf . Since 1976 he has been a member of the jury for this exhibition. Axel Vater is represented in many museums, including the Museum Schloss Moyland , van der Grinten collection.

Artistic career

Axel Vater moved to West Germany in 1959 . There he attended school in Solingen with the completion of the secondary school leaving certificate . He then studied from 1967 to 1971 at the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf in the stage arts department with Teo Otto and Wolf Jürgen Seesselberg . In 1971 he was appointed a master class student.

In the summer 1971 season, father was a set designer and assistant at the summer theater in Winterthur . Between 1971 and 1973 he studied fine art at the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf with Rolf Crummenauer . In 1973 he married the biologist Beatrix Dobberstein. Since 1973 father was based in Düsseldorf as a freelance artist.

In 1975 he was awarded the Art Prize of the Artists on the occasion of the 25th Winter Exhibition in Düsseldorf (now the Great Art Exhibition NRW Düsseldorf ). Since 1976 father has been a member of the jury for the winter exhibition in Düsseldorf at irregular intervals. Since 1979 he has been working as a freelance artist in Krefeld. Between 1984 and 1996 he was deputy chairman of the Association for the Organization of Art Exhibitions and the Association of Düsseldorf Artists. From 1985 father was co-organizer of the large art exhibition NRW Düsseldorf and since 1985 he has been involved in the catalog design of the annual exhibition catalog for this art exhibition.

In 1992 he was visiting curator for the exhibition Enigma in a mountain dungeon in Deventer . Since 1993 father was a member of the jury and co-organizer of the art fair Huntenkunst in Doetinchem . Between 2004 and 2008 he was chairman of the association for the organization of art exhibitions and head of the large art exhibition NRW Düsseldorf . He was also a board member of the Museum Schloss Moyland Association.

Axel Vater primarily dealt with graphics, printmaking, painting, sculpture and objects as well as collages and photos. These techniques were partially linked and superimposed. Since 1990 he has primarily dealt with collage, objects (picture boxes), photography and painting on paper.
