The United States Geological Survey mapped it on the basis of surveys and aerial photographs of the United States Navy between 1960 and 1963. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it after Commander Charles E. Axthelm (* 1928), adjutant to the commander of the support units of the US Navy in Antarctica during the Deep Freeze operations of 1965 and 1966.
