Ay-O ( Japanese 靉 嘔 , Ai Ō , real name: Takao Iijima ( 飯 島 孝 雄 , Iijima Takao ); * May 19, 1931 , Tamatsukuri (today: Namegata ), Ibaraki Prefecture ) is a Japanese fluxus artist .

Ay-O, whose real name is Takao Iijima, studied art at the Tokyo School of Education until 1945. His career began with the Democratic Artist Association of El-Q, which was known for promoting artistic freedom and independence. His artistic work is shaped by the collaboration with Fluxus artists such as George Maciunas , Emmett Williams , Dick Higgins and Nam June Paik .

Ay-O's screen prints and etchings in rainbow colors are internationally known and have earned him the nickname "Rainbow Man". Other areas of work are “Finger Boxes” and Happenings . His first "rainbow happening" was performed in 1964 at Carnegie Hall in New York.

From 1968 to 1969 Ay-O was a professor at the University of Kentucky .

Since 2008 some of his works have been exhibited in the museum FLUXUS + in Potsdam.
