Aya & Gal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aya & Gal was an artist duo that existed from 1992 to 2001. Aya Frenkel (* 1967, Jerusalem ) and Gal Wertman (* 1966, Haifa ) hide behind the name Aya & Gal . The addition of the name Middle East is intended to clarify the political dimension of their activities.

The duo graduated from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in 1990 . Both live in Jerusalem . The work The Naturalize / Local Observation Point was shown at the 1997 documenta X in Kassel. It is an interactive installation consisting of a CD-ROM and the projection of a video film onto the wall. The protagonist is a figure in latex.

Latex is the most widely used material by Aya & Gal . They use latex as a coating on the body and face, as a suit or mask . Skin-like latex envelopes were made with the aid of plaster casts of Wertman's body. Wertman says that he was fascinated for years by the seam line, the point between the skin and the outside, between body and skin, which he calls the "zero point".
