Ayisha (Ethiopia)

Ayisha (also written as Ayesha or Aysha ) is a small town in the Shinile zone of the Somali region of Ethiopia . It is the main town of Woreda Ayisha and is located near the border with Djibouti and Somaliland / Somalia on the Addis Ababa – Djibouti railway line .

According to the 2005 census, Ayisha had 1,653 inhabitants. In 1997, 56.8% (630) of the population were Somali , 20.29% (225) Amharen , 11.27% (125) Oromo , 5.23% (58) Gurage and 2.88% (32) Tigray .

In Degago near Ayisha there was a camp for refugees from Somalia from 1989 to 2005, which was also called Ayisha or Aisha . In 2005 the UNHCR was able to close the camp as the majority of the refugees from Northern Somalia / Somaliland were repatriated. The refugees from southern and central Somalia, where the civil war continues , were transferred to the last camp at Kebri Beyah .
