Ayton , Gaelic : Baile Eighe , is a town in the northeast of the Scottish Council Area Scottish Borders or in the traditional county of Berwickshire . It is located about three kilometers southwest of Eyemouth and ten kilometers northwest of Berwick-upon-Tweed, England, near the left bank of Eye Water .

history

Ayton's history is linked to Ayton Castle , which was built in the 12th century. In the late Middle Ages, Ayton Castle was considered one of the strongest fortresses between Berwick and Edinburgh . After English troops razed Ayton Castle in 1448, troops under the Earl of Surrey took the rebuilt fortress in 1498. A classical mansion of the same name was later built on the site . After this was burned down in 1834, today's Ayton Castle was built in the Scotts Baronial style in 1851 .

Since the 12th century, the St Dionysius' Church was a church building in the immediate vicinity. In the 1860s it was decided to build a new church. The Edinburgh architect James Maitland Wardrop was responsible for the design of today's Ayton Parish Church .

As in various localities in the area, sawmills and paper mills settled in Ayton at the time of industrialization.

traffic

The A1 leading from London to Edinburgh bypasses Ayton in a wide arc and connects the town to the trunk road network.

Ayton is on what is now the East Coast Main Line . The line was built in the 19th century as a section of the North British Railway . Although the line is still in operation, the station has now been closed.
