Freedom Tower (Azadi)
The Tower of Freedom ( Persian برج آزادی burj-e azadi 'Freedom Tower ') is the landmark of modern Tehran , the capital of Iran . It is located in the Tarascht district .
The tower was built between 1969 and 1971 on the occasion of the 2500 year jubilee of the Iranian monarchy under the name Shahyad Tower (translated as “Monument to the Shahs ”). After the Iranian Revolution of 1979, it was renamed the Azadi Tower.
The tower, built by the Iranian architect Hossein Amanat on behalf of Schahbanu Farah Pahlavi , is 45 meters high and represents a combination of Islamic architecture and the Sassanid style. It is completely covered with over 25,000 white marble stones broken in Isfahan . The tower is part of the Azadi cultural complex, which can be found on the more than 50,000 m² Azadi Square in Tehran. There is a museum and several fountains under the tower.
