Azelfafage is the proper name of the star Pi 1 Cygni (π 1 Cyg) in the constellation Swan . Azelfafage has an apparent magnitude of +4.64 mag and belongs to the spectral class B3 IV. The distance is approximately 1,725 light years . It is a spectroscopic double star with a blue-white subgiant as the main component, which has about 3,300 times the luminosity of the sun .
The name goes back to an Arabic word that has not been passed down clearly, although depending on the source it has a meaning السلحفاة / as-sulaḥfāt / 'the turtle',ظلف الفرس / ẓilf al-faras / 'the horse's hoof' orأصل الدجاجة / aṣl ad-daǧāǧa / 'origin of the hen' assumed.
Scientific investigations
One investigation found that dark cloud B 164 may be the same distance from us as the neighboring star π 1 Cygni, which may have recently started to compress this cloud on one side due to heating or increased radiation pressure.
location
Azelfafage ( or Cygni 80, 4.66 m ) is located in the constellation Swan on the border with the constellation Lizard . It is located northeast of the brightest star Deneb ( or Cygni 50, 1.25 m ), which marks the tail of the constellation Swan , and northeast of the equally bright open star cluster Messier 39 (4.66 m ). This star cluster is located approximately halfway between Azelfafage and the slightly darker star Cygni 71 ( , 5.22 m ). The slightly brighter star Cygni 81 ( 4.18 m ) can be seen a little south of Azelfafage .
