Mountain landscape near Azgour |
Azgour ( Arabic ازكور, Zentralatlas-Tamazight ⴰⵣⴳⵓⵔ ) is a mountain community with about 7,000 inhabitants in the High Atlas in the province of Al Haouz in the Marrakech-Safi region , Morocco .
Location and climate
The mountain village of Azgour is located on the middle reaches of the Oued Zat approx. 70 km (driving distance) southeast of Marrakech at an altitude of approx. 1350 m . The climate is temperate; Rain (approx. 570 mm / year) falls almost exclusively in the winter half-year.
population
The inhabitants of the municipality are almost without exception Berbers ; many have immigrated from the surrounding mountain villages.
economy
The traditional economy is concentrated in the fields on the riverside; barley is mainly grown here. It is usually too cold to grow vegetables (there can still be night frosts in summer) and so they usually have to be bought or exchanged at the markets. Mainly cattle breeding and grazing (sheep and goats) are practiced.
Attractions
Because of its remoteness, the appearance of the place has hardly changed since the 1960s; however, some of the older mud houses have been replaced by new buildings made of hollow brick . For most tourists, Azgour is a starting point for mountain hikes or for canoe tours on the Oued Zat.
