As azonal vegetation is called plant formations (vegetation types), the nature of which is due to certain conditions of the soil characteristics and / or the water balance significantly from the typical vegetation of the climate zone differs, in the considered formation occurs. It is in contrast to the zonal vegetation , which mostly runs roughly belt-shaped around the earth .

For example, within the zonal vegetation of the European beech forest in the north German lowlands (which belongs to the vegetation zone of deciduous deciduous forests ) on the banks of rivers, alluvial forests are formed , in permanent depressions swamp forests and swamp forests on regularly temporarily flooded locations . Other typical azonal types of vegetation are, for example, dunes , rocky sites , moors , oases and larger inland waters .

The azonal vegetation also includes the galmei plants that occur in the triangle around Aachen , in the Siegerland and in the Harz where ore was previously mined. Galmei plants are able to cope with heavy metal pollution in the soil. The so-called serpentine endemites that occur in serpentine areas are also assigned to azonal vegetation.

If one looks not only at the plant world, but also at the entire biome of a region (→ biome ), the term pedobiome is used in contrast to the zonobiom .

If climatic factors are responsible for the different species composition, one speaks of extrazonal vegetation .
