Georg Grabherr
Georg Grabherr (born April 30, 1946 in Bregenz ) is an Austrian ecologist and former head of the Department for Conservation Biology, Vegetation and Landscape Ecology at the University of Vienna .
Live and act
Grabherr attended elementary and secondary schools in Bregenz from 1952 to 1966. In 1967 he began studying biology and geology at the University of Innsbruck . He passed the Magister rer. nat. and did his doctorate as part of the IBP project "Dwarf shrub heath, Mt. Patscherkofel " under the direction of Walter Larcher . From 1975 to 1986 he held an assistant professorship for geobotany at the Institute for Botany at the University of Innsbruck. In 1979 he taught as a Research Fellow at the University of Wales at Bangor . In 1983 he completed his habilitation at the University of Innsbruck. In 1986 he received various appointments. From 1986 to 2011 he was department head and university professor for nature conservation biology, vegetation and landscape ecology at the University of Vienna. Since 2003 he has been chairman of the Austrian Man and the Biosphere (MAB) national committee. In 1987, together with Michael Gottfried and Harald Pauli, he founded the “Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine Environments” GLORIA, in the framework of which long-term vegetation-ecological studies are carried out to prove climate change. From 2006 to 2013 he was Vice Director of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Mountain Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and head of department for the GLORIA project.
Awards
In November 2011 Grabherr received the “Austrian Nature Conservation Award” from the Austrian Nature Conservation Union . On January 7th, 2013 he was named Scientist of the Year 2012 by the “Club of Education and Science Journalists of Austria” .
In 2013 he received the Vorarlberg Science Prize and the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, 1st Class .
On November 27, 2015, Georg Grabherr was also awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Innsbruck .
