The bearded psithyrus ( Bombus barbutellus ) is a type of parasitic living psithyrus . It parasitizes mainly in the garden bumblebee ( Bombus hortorum ), but also in the field bumblebee ( Bombus ruderatus ). It is distributed from western Europe to Mongolia , to the north the species advances up to 62 ° latitude.
features
The bearded cuckoo bumblebee is similar in appearance to the garden bumblebee, but there are black tufts of hair in the area of the face, which are particularly dense in the males. The males are 15 to 16 millimeters tall, the larger females reach 18 to 20 millimeters. The thorax is black in the middle and closed with yellow stripes to the front and back. The first to third tergites of the abdomen are again hairy black. The hairs of the first tergite in the males turn slightly yellow. The hairs on the fourth to sixth tergite are white.
Way of life
The males of the bearded cuckoo bumblebee mostly feed on the nectar of the knapweed , scabies and thistles . The females, on the other hand, prefer dandelions . The species is univoltin , i.e. H. there is only one generation in a year. The overwintered females appear between the end of April and the end of July. The females of the new generation fly from mid-July, the males from mid-June.
