Béclan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Béclan is an old red wine variety that is grown in the Jura wine-growing region in the middle-east of France . In 1988 a planted vineyard area of 10 hectares was raised. In his work -Les vignobles du Jura et de la Franche-Comté, synonymie, description et histoire des cépages qui les peupl, published in 1897, the ampelographer Charles Rouget estimated the stock to be 400 to 500 hectares.

In the Jura, the variety is often called Petit Béclan to distinguish it from Peloursin , locally called Gros Béclan .

The red wines are light colored and moderately rich in tannins ( tannins ).

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is slightly hairy with white wool, with a carmine tinge. The young leaves are hairy like a spider web and spotted bronze (anthocyanin spots)
  • The slightly pentagonal leaves (see also the article leaf shape ) are dark green, small, thick and pronounced five-lobed. The stalk bay is lyren-shaped open or slightly closed. The leaf margin is bluntly serrated. The teeth are set medium-wide compared to other grape varieties. The foliage turns completely red in autumn.
  • The cylindrical grape is small and dense. The rounded to ovoid berries are small. When fully ripe, they are deep blue to black in color.

The Béclan grape variety ripens around 10 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen early for a grape variety internationally. The variety is considered low-yielding.

Béclan sprouts early and is therefore at risk in late spring frosts. It is sensitive to the fungal diseases of powdery mildew and downy mildew as well as gray mold rot .
