The Phoebus (after the Greek god of light Apollon ) is a single-seat glider made by Bölkow GmbH .

history

The construction was developed on the basis of experience based on the predecessor Phönix (the first airplane in plastic construction). The first flight of the aircraft took place on April 11, 1964 and on February 17, 1966 it received its type certification. A total of 254 units (133 of them in the C version) were built between 1964 and 1970. The price for a Phoebus in 1968 was around 20,000 DM.

construction

The glider designed by Richard Eppler , Hermann Nägele and Rudolf Lindner was the first to be built in series from fiber composite materials in Laupheim . The hull and surfaces are made in a sandwich construction, with balsa wood as the core material and GRP as the top layer.

Versions

The versions marked with 1 (A1, B1, C1) at the end are the series versions.

  • Phoebus A, first version with 15 m span and fixed undercarriage (Rudolf Lindner became German standard class champion in 1966 )
  • Phoebus B, version with retractable landing gear (1969 B2 with improved aerodynamics, B3 version with modified profile and different controls)
  • Phoebus C, 1967 version with retractable landing gear and 17 m wingspan (Göran Ax thus became vice world champion in the open class in 1968 ), (C2 version with weight-saving measures)
  • Phoebus M, planned motor glider variant (with 16 kW Lloyd engine)
