Bad Girl is a 2017 French-Turkish animated short film directed by Ayçe Kartal .

action

A little girl follows his thoughts seemingly incoherently and erratically: she warns her teddy Michi about the monsters, tells about his red shoes and his grandfather's shaving parlor, his love for the wind, the animals and the grandparents' farm. The idea of a whale suddenly turns into a roaring water monster. The girl is thinking about God because she recently started taking religious education classes. It asks what God looks like and wishes that God would always be with him and protect him.

The girl, it turns out, is in a hospital. His bear Michi is his consolation and his positive thoughts, among other things about the joys of jumping rope, are replaced by bad ones about monsters chewing off his teddy bear's ears. One sequence shows the girl being kidnapped and raped by a group of monsters. His grandmother, the girl says, always told him that when she finished her bread she would get wings and fly. The girl asks God if she would have escaped the monsters if she had finished her bread.

production

Already at the beginning of Bad Girl it is shown that the film is based on a true story. Director Ayçe Kartal was inspired for the film by a newspaper article: He reported on the gang rape of an eight-year-old in Turkey; all perpetrators were acquitted. Kartal processed the case in the film and interviewed doctors in a child psychiatry and analyzed drawings of children who had been victims of rape. The girl's leaps in thought reflect the " schizophrenia " which, according to Kartal, helps numerous rape victims to come to terms with what they have experienced. In total, Kartal researched the film for half a year.

Kartal worked on the film for 1.5 years. The animation was carried out digitally on a Wacom tablet, with Kartal making around 13,000 individual drawings. He animated the girl's positive memories with felt-tip pens and colored pencils, while the negative memories were implemented with black ink.

Bad Girl has been screened at numerous film festivals, including the Festival d'Animation Annecy in June 2017 , the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2017 and the Festival du Court-Métrage de Clermont-Ferrand in February 2018 . ARTE showed the film for the first time on German television on June 15, 2017 as part of the program Kurzschluss .

Awards

At the Festival d'Animation Annecy 2017 Bad Girl won the jury's award in the short film category and was awarded the Grand Prix in the national competition at the Festival du Court-Métrage de Clermont-Ferrand 2017. Bad Girl was awarded the César in the category Best Animated Short Film in 2019 .
