The Búrfell power plant ( isl. Búrfellsvirkjun , Búrfellsstöð ) is a hydropower plant in southwest Iceland , which is operated by the Icelandic energy company Landsvirkjun .

The Búrfell power plant was completed in 1969 as the first large power plant in Iceland. Its electrical energy was mainly used for the aluminum works in Straumsvík , which is about 100 kilometers west of Hafnarfjörður . With an output of 270 MW, it was the most powerful power plant in the country until the completion of the Kárahnjúkavirkjun (690 MW) in 2008.

The power plant is built as a diversion power plant. North of the mountain Búrfell (669 m) water flows from the river Þjórsá into the artificial lake Bjarnalón (1 km²) and is led through a 1.5 km long tunnel with a drop height of 115 m to the turbine house, where it is in the river Fossá í Þjórsárdal is delivered. This Fossá flows into the Þjórsá after 2 km.
