Our Charly is a family series by Phoenix Film that was produced for ZDF and first broadcast in December 1995. The specialty of the series is the clothed chimpanzee Charly, who is involved in the action and acts as an entertaining contrast to the often tragic developments in the main storylines. After the production of 16 seasons, the series was canceled. The last episode of the 16th season was first broadcast on June 9, 2012 on ZDF.
action
Our Charly is about the Berlin veterinary family Martin, consisting of Dr. Philipp, photographer Michaela and the children Sandra and Oliver. In addition, Charlotte Roesner-Lombardi and her husband Rodolfo Lombardi are part of Philipp's team. Charlotte is also a veterinarian and Rodolfo is a former cook. Not to be forgotten is the dog Othello. Title hero chimpanzee Charly runs to the family after he was kidnapped by animal smugglers. Since the actual owner is dead and Charly is too old to be released into the wild, the Martins keep the monkey.
In the second season, Philipp founds an animal sanctuary, which is managed by Rodolfo as an animal keeper.
In the third season, cousin Johnny Bradford comes from the USA and moves to the Martins, but moves back at the end of the season.
In the fourth season, Philipp introduces a new veterinarian, Dr. Maximilian "Max" Henning arrives at the animal sanctuary. Then Philipp dies in a mountain accident in Bavaria after falling from a rock. Michaela and the children then have problems financing the house and the practice. In the end, it's Max who buys the house and even takes over the practice. Max and Michaela fall in love.
In the fifth season, Andrea Jüstgen suddenly appears and pretends to be Max's daughter. Max has no idea about a daughter, but this actually comes true. Then Michaela and Max get married.
At the end of the sixth season, Andrea moves to Cologne with her grandmother.
In the course of the seventh season, Oliver meets the hotel employee Tanja Liebig and meets her. He also gets to know her daughter Lena, but at first does not know that she is her daughter. At the end of the season, Michaela dies in a traffic accident after saving the life of a little girl. The girl ran out onto the street and was almost hit by a car, but Michaela's quick intervention enabled her to save the child and was hit by the car herself. Tanja and Lena were given notice of their apartment, so they move in with Max, Oliver and Sandra.
At the beginning of the eighth season, there is chaos at the Hennings, nobody comes to cook or do laundry and there is hardly any time for the children either. When the housekeeper Heidemarie Hoppe lost her job, Charlotte had the idea to employ her. Max is so taken by surprise that he can't say no and hires her. At the beginning of the season, Sandra moves to live with her grandma and her boyfriend in Tenerife. Max also met the lawyer Maren Waldner and later also her children Constanze "Conny" and Gregor. During the season, Oliver, Tanja and Lena move into their own apartment together. Max and Maren become a couple. At the end of the season, Maren, Conny and Gregor move in with Max.
At the beginning of the eleventh season, Maren's brother Dirk Scheerer appears, who has come from the USA for a job. Dirk also moves in with Max and Maren. Also at the beginning of the season, the family received the news that Rodolfo had died in a traffic accident in Italy. Max and Maren drive to Charlotte, who is also in Italy, and stay until the funeral. A short time later, Rodolfo's niece Pia Lombardi comes to Berlin to help Charlotte during this difficult time. She moves in with Charlotte. Pia is a translator and also takes on Rodolfo's position in the animal sanctuary.
Between the thirteenth and fourteenth season, Max and Maren separated, the reason and whereabouts of Maren, Conny and Gregor, as well as Maren's brother Dirk, remain unclear. Pia does not appear after the thirteenth season for no reason either.
At the beginning of the fourteenth season, Max moves from Berlin to Potsdam to open his own veterinary clinic there. The clinic has its own operating theater and laboratory, as well as a large house and garden. In addition to Max, Othello and Charly also move to Potsdam, also Mrs. Hoppe, Max's housekeeper, who gets her own apartment on the top floor. Charlotte has retired. Max also meets the veterinarian Dr. Katharina Hauser and their children Lilly and Jonas know. Katharina also wanted to buy the property that now belongs to Max. After a lot of back and forth, Katharina starts as an equal partner in Max Praxis and Charlotte also joins in again, but still as an employee. After Katharina's house was completely destroyed by water damage, she and her children move in with Max. Katharina's brother Markus Bredow is a landscape architect and visits the family regularly. Max already knows him before he meets Katharina, because he has already designed his new garden. A short time later, Max and Katharina open a new animal sanctuary and hire Christian Berger, who recently lost his job on a horse farm, as animal keepers. At the end of the sixteenth season and the series, Katharina von Max becomes pregnant and the two get married.
Special
On December 31, 1999, under the title New Year's Eve 1999: Pure Nerves , about 20-minute specials from the ZDF series Alle Meine Töchter , Unser Charly , Forsthaus Falkenau and Zwei Männer am Herd were broadcast as a compilation. Only the episode of Unser Charly was repeated later (on December 28, 2002) and given its own title ( Charly celebrates New Year's Eve ) as well as the corresponding opening and closing credits. In some episode guides, this episode is classified between seasons 7 and 8, depending on the date of the repetition. In terms of content, however, it lies between seasons 4 and 5, because Michaela Martin explains that in the old year she will leave a loved one (her deceased husband) behind.

Episode list
Location
Initially, a villa on the Wannsee served as the main backdrop . It is in the street Am Sandwerder, house number 12. The villa was already seen in the television series A Home for Animals as the backdrop for the doctor's office. From the 14th season the main set is in Stahnsdorf , within the series it should represent a courtyard in Potsdam.
Criticism and attitude of the series
Animal rights activists criticized the training and husbandry of the chimpanzees: the at least eleven chimpanzees trained for the shooting were separated from their mothers at the age of two. Young monkeys were also no longer suitable for turning when they reached puberty. After three years of service, the animals live or lived in human captivity. Due to the early isolation of conspecifics, integration into a chimpanzee group is extremely difficult. The main allegations, however, were that insufficient attention was paid to what happened to the chimpanzees after they were shown on television, and that the ZDF missed its educational mandate with the series .
The German Animal Welfare Association referred to a study by the Free University of Berlin and also criticized the use of the chimpanzees in the series. The world also reported on the criticism on June 9, 2010. The accommodation of the animals after their use in the film, when they could no longer be used for further productions due to their age, was also criticized. The animal trainer company sent the animals to the Amarillo Wildlife Refuge in the US state of Texas. The spokeswoman for the production company Phoenix Film , Tina Ziegler, admitted in an interview that the allegations regarding this placement were not unfounded. The animal trainer company has therefore set up its own zoo in California. Three days after the world reported on the criticism, ZDF stopped the series after 15 years with the 16th season. The newspaper reported on it again and made a connection to the criticism and protests of the animal rights activists.
