history

The village of Büchig is located north of Bretten, embedded in the Kraichgau landscape. On January 1, 1974, the municipality of Büchig near Bretten became a district of the large district town of Bretten.

The first documented message about Büchig comes from the year 1290. Two documents from 1290 and 1296 that belong together in terms of content mentioned the place name for the first time. It mentions a farm in - beech - which Heinrich von Eberstein gave to the brothers Heinrich and Johann, called Wurme zu Bretten, as a fief. The place name goes back to the Old High German “buoh” or the Middle High German “buoch”, which means “beech forest”, “forest”, “forest with a large tree population”.

The formerly purely rural village, located away from the major traffic axes, has developed into a charming residential community with a village character in the post-war period, but especially in the 1960s and 70s. On the one hand, the reason was the serious decline in agriculture; today there are only two full-time farmers left, each of whom cultivate between 80 and 120 ha. The remaining agricultural area is used by around 10 farms on a sideline basis. The area is 430 hectares in total, 80 hectares of which are forest.

coat of arms

The coat of arms, which has been established since 1911, is based on a round stain seal that was in use in the 18th century. The first evidence comes from the year 1760. The seal showed a horseshoe, a flower and an angel's head. The horseshoe was once regarded as a village symbol and was attached to the district boundary stones. Since coats of arms should be kept simple and plain, the horseshoe was already adopted as the main symbol in the final stipulation. The horseshoe as the content of the coat of arms could be seen as a distinctive legal symbol compared to the neighboring communities or as a lucky symbol of the coat of arms. The place belonged to the Speyer Monastery from the 15th century until 1803. So it was obvious to adopt the colors white and blue for the coat of arms. In black-and-white depictions, the different coat of arms colors are indicated by different heraldic hatching. In Büchig's case, it is white for silver and horizontal hatching for blue.
