Emil Kaler-Reinthal (born June 27, 1850 in Vienna , † February 22, 1897 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian social ethicist and workers' leader.

Life

He was born the illegitimate son of Wilhelmine von Kaler zu Lanzenheim (1824–1906) and Andreas Luckmann (? -1852), post office clerk. From 1870 to 1885 he studied - with interruptions - at the universities of Graz, Vienna, Zurich and Basel the subjects of philosophy, history and philology . He then received his doctorate in philosophy (subject: "The ethics of utilitarianism").

Initially (from 1871 to 1872) he was a lecturer at the Wiener Arbeiter-Bildungsverein and editor of the weekly magazine "Die Glocke", Vienna. From June 15 to 17, 1872 he took part in the first general German trade union congress in Erfurt. Thereafter (from 1873 to 1875) he lived in exile in Germany after being convicted of "incitement" in Austria. During this time he was editor of the " Nordhäuser Zeitung ". From 1875 to 1877 he was a member of the editorial team of "Gleichheit", Vienna; in addition, he was a leading member of the Labor Party . In 1878 and 1879 he was editor of the central organ "Der Sozialist", Vienna. After that (from 1879 to 1880) he was imprisoned for lese majesty . From 1881 he worked as a freelancer for "Truth", Vienna. From 1882 to 1887 he stayed in Switzerland; he was editor of the party organs "Der Sozialdemokrat", Zurich, and "Bürgerzeitung", Hamburg.

In 1887 his treatise "Wilhelm Weitling. His agitation and teaching presented in a historical context" was published in the series "Social Democratic Library". In the same year he resigned from the Labor Party. From 1887 to 1889 he worked for various newspapers and magazines (including "Deutsche Words", Vienna). On January 3, 1889, he wrote a farewell letter to Victor Adler. This marks the break with social democracy , which is now also oriented towards Marx and Engels in Austria . Kaler-Reinthal's book "The Morals of the Future" was also published in 1889. From 1889 to 1890 Kaler-Reinthal was editor of the "Deutsche Volkszeitung", Reichenberg, from 1890 to 1895 of the "Deutsche Zeitung", Vienna, from 1895 to 1897 of the "Tiroler Tagblatt", Innsbruck. On February 22, 1897, he died of suicide in Innsbruck.
