The Citizens' Convention ( spelling : BürgerKonvent ) was a political association that was founded in April 2003 and dissolved in May 2015.

History and structure

According to the statutes of May 2007, the purpose of the association was “to promote participation in the political decision-making process of the population through civic education and to improve the future viability of society in Germany and Europe”.

Leading founding members were the Bonn political scientist Gerd Langguth and the social scientist and publicist Meinhard Miegel (spokesman).

The last board of directors (2013–2015) consisted of Klaus Peter Krause , Vera Lengsfeld and Beatrix von Storch ; former former board members were u. a. Gisela Fischer, Hans-Günter Lind, Gerhard Schulte Thomas Grundmann and Patrick Freiherr von Stauffenberg. The organization continued to be supported by leading figures from politics and business, such as Roland Berger and Otto Graf Lambsdorff († 2009).

At the end of April / beginning of May 2003, the Citizens' Convention gained recognition through a large-scale advertising campaign entitled Germany is better than it is now . The campaign was supervised by the advertising agency Abels & Gray and financed with 6 million euros by August von Finck junior . From January 2011 to June 2013 the newsletter BürgerBrief was published several times a year , which was devoted to changing political topics.

According to a study by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung , the Citizens' Convention saw itself as a non-partisan institution of citizens who want to transform the state society into a real civil society. The citizens' convention promotes political and social solutions that are not committed to short-term politics or a clientele. An analysis by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung's Politics and Advice Department to assess the alternative for Germany describes the Citizens' Convention as " apo from the right" and "from above", which refers to the return of the state to core competencies and the reduction of social benefits in favor of private provision aim. In addition, pressure is exerted on politicians with the help of bought-in and professional campaign policies. The structures are "non-transparent and not democratic." At an extraordinary general meeting on May 22, 2015, it was unanimously decided to dissolve the association on May 31, 2015. It was then in liquidation until it was finally deleted from the register of associations on December 16, 2016. Liquidators were from Storch and Krause.
