Bərdə is a city in Azerbaijan and the capital of the surrounding Bərdə Rayon . In 2014, around 38,900 people lived in the city on the Tərtər River .

history

Bərdə, Armenian Pʿartaw, was founded by the Shah of the Sassanid Empire Peroz I as Peroz-abad (Perozstadt), the name perhaps on the site of an older Armenian settlement, and was founded by Kavadh I under the name Peroz-kavadh ("Victorious Kavadh" Peroz means "the winner" in Middle Persian ) attached. In late antiquity and in the early Middle Ages, the city was, according to Kabala, the center of the state of Albania and the Albanian Christian Church. After the Arab invasion, the city lost its importance, but later became the capital of the state of Arrān . In 943 the city was briefly conquered by the Kievan Rus .

Culture and sport

In the city there is the tomb of Akhmed Zocheybana from the 14th century, built by Ahmad ibn Ayyub Nakhchivani. There is also the Imamzadeh Mosque and a cultural center with a museum.

The ABN Bərdə football club is based in the city .
