The BBÖ VT 50 was an engine - railcars of the Federal Railways Austria (BBÖ). It was a four-axle railcar with originally mechanical power transmission and was manufactured by Renault . The car was only in use until 1939 and was rebuilt several times during this time.

History and technical data

The car had been ordered by the BBÖ in 1929 from Renault for the Schwarzenau – Zwettl private railway , the operation of which the state railways had been entrusted with since the opening. However, it was stationed in Mistelbach after its acceptance in July 1929 . In the operation at the BBÖ, he was unable to convince. As a first conversion measure, it was equipped with a new engine from Gräf & Stift in 1931 . The mechanical power transmission was later replaced by a fluid transmission. In 1938 the car was taken over by the Deutsche Reichsbahn and designated as the 773 . In 1939 the car was converted into a passenger car after being parked for a long time . The vehicle was lost during the war.

Vehicle body

The appearance of the vehicle differed greatly from all other vehicles at the BBÖ. It was described as angular and had two large front windows. The steel frame was stiffened with a truss . The machinery of the car took up about a third of the vehicle area, the other two thirds offered space for 70 passengers. What was striking about the car were the narrow window stems, which almost gave the impression of full glazing on the sides. The passenger compartment was accessible through a central entrance.

The drive system of the vehicle was housed in a machine chamber. The engine of Renault, the min at 1000 -1 speed gave a power of 81 kW (110 hp) was directly connected to the four-speed transmission. It was considered a long stroke , with a cylinder diameter of 110 mm the piston stroke was 160 mm. The power transmission was a bit unusual. The gearbox was a little above the floor of the car and was also placed in the machine room. It was switched by chain hoists. The two drive wheels of the motor bogie were driven from the gearbox output via cardan shafts. When the vehicle was in operation, there was an uneven distribution of mass in the vehicle, which resulted in uneven running. The car was then designated as inoperable .
