The GIBS in Georgigasse

The Graz International Bilingual School (also known under the abbreviations GIBS and BG & BRG; Georgigasse ) is a bilingual federal high school in Graz with an international focus.

history

The school was founded in 1991 with the help of Peter Bierbaumer , Chair of English Studies at the University of Graz, and the first director Elisabeth Fleischmann. Initially, it was a relocated class at the Pestalozzi School in Klusemannstrasse. In 1994 the old Marschallschule could be rented and the school was called Bundesgymnasium Marschallgasse . In 1999 you had to go back to Grenadiergasse for renovations. In the 2000s, however, space became increasingly scarce, and in the end lessons were even held in containers. In 2010, when the Diocese's Pedagogical Academy moved into the Augustinum after the PÄDAK was abolished, the spacious building in Eggenberg was vacated.

School profile

The GIBS is an international grammar school with around 600 students from the fifth to the twelfth grade and around 60 teachers. In addition to the normal school staff, language assistants and co-teachers , who act as language trainers, are financed through the school contribution from the parents . This increases the students' knowledge and understanding of the various subjects.

The language of instruction at the school is English in the form of "flexible monolingualism". The first three months of the first year start with an intensive study phase in which students acquire communication skills in English that are important for further learning. After a certain level of language competence has been built up, the learning material of the other subjects is also worked on in the English class if necessary so that there is no disadvantage for other core subject areas.

In the seventh grade, students have been choosing between French and Spanish since 2009, and in the ninth grade, between French / Spanish, Latin or Russian. History is taught in French in Grade 11.

During the first five years at the school, more and more projects are organized that are taught in different subjects at the same time. It is consciously important that the students deal with the languages and the other learning material. They can do this in later years (from the 10th to the 12th grade) mainly through the course system, which was introduced in 1999/2000. The students choose, with certain credit requirements, elective subjects that are important both for the Matura and for later professional life. Thus, the schedule of the students can be individually tailored to interests and talents. In these compulsory elective subjects there is more and more opportunities for excursions, advice, applications, practices, travel and the learning of other skills.

In addition to the program for German-speaking and bilingual students, international students have the option of a DaF course ( German as a foreign language ), which replaces German lessons. The evaluation of these students is based on §18 / 22 of the School Education Act, which allows the respective student to state either German or English as their mother tongue.

Conditions for registration

The GIBS is a grammar school with public rights, but due to the high number of applicants, admission is more selective than at other grammar schools.

Course system

The course system is based on a credit system in which students choose elective subjects from the 10th grade onwards. You will be admitted to the Matura after a certain number of courses in the various subjects. In addition, certain courses must be completed for oral and in-depth Matura subjects, as these are also part of the Matura curriculum.

It consists of the three school representatives, the parent representatives and the faculty representatives. architecture

The school is located in the north-west of Graz in Eggenberg , next to the historic Eggenberg Palace and opposite the Graz School Sisters' private school .

The school building of the former Catholic-Pedagogical Academy Graz was built in 1964 according to the plans of the architects Günther Domenig and Eilfried Huth . This part houses the biology room, two IT rooms, the library, the gymnasium and the associated rooms, the music room and the art room, several practice rooms, the main part of the classrooms, the secretariat and the conference rooms. In addition, the north wing offers space for the ACE area, the large cafeteria next to the smaller one in the central building and the main office of the school. Quiet and study areas can be found throughout the school. The underground parking garage can be reached directly from the main building.

In 2010, when the Graz International Bilingual School moved in, an extension took place; it houses the classrooms for the Matura classes, the chemistry and physics halls and the workshop.

Sports facilities

In addition to the school's own gym, the neighboring ASKÖ and Eggenberger Auster Bad offer halls, (beach) volleyball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, soccer and baseball fields, running tracks and indoor and outdoor swimming pools, which are regularly used by the students for school and extracurricular activities.

Events

The parents' association and the students organize certain events several times a year. The high school graduation ball is known throughout the city and sometimes has more than 3,000 visitors. Other events include the annual jazz brunch, the closing ceremony, the Halloween and Mardi Gras party, the Christmas performance and Drama Club performances.
