content

This life's work by Constant von Wurzbach-Tannenberg contains 24,254 biographies of memorable people who were born between 1750 and 1850 in the Austrian crown lands or who lived and worked there. It is therefore a unique collection of biographical data from the Habsburg Empire . According to Wurzbach's own statements, around two thirds of these are said to have been lexically recorded for the first time. Wurzbach stuck to the unified state of 1855 and considered countries that had long since ceased to belong to the Danube Monarchy until the end . Extensive literature references, references to portraits, reproduction of inscriptions on monuments and epitaphs , numerous detailed descriptive and tabular genealogies and blazon of coats of arms among members of the nobility constantly went beyond the given framework. The project, originally conceived in six, then twelve, grew to 60 volumes due to the extensive material. Several different and detailed registers of persons are appended to each volume. Regardless of some shortcomings, the "Wurzbach" still has its place in many well-known libraries at home and abroad as a standard biographical work, mainly because for many of the people it contains no more recent adaptations are available and its author was able to use sources that are no longer available or .are accessible.

Author's closing note

Despite illness and many other difficulties, the work was finally completed on July 3, 1891. So far, no one has managed to complete a comparable work - despite the unstoppable technical progress since then. At the end of the 60th volume, Wurzbach added the following quatrain:

Thank God, the great work is now over
It was because I didn't finish it -
I wrote these sixty volumes all by myself!
Lexicon-weary rest your hands.

Updates

In 1916, preparatory work began on an expanded new edition of Wurzbach's work, which began as the New Austrian Biography . Were planned as a "Division 1" text volumes with detailed biographies, as "Division 2" a bibliography (published in one volume in 1925) and "Division 3" Biographical land register with short biographies (never released). Nine volumes of "Department 1" appeared as New Austrian Biography, from volume 10 the volumes of this series were then published under the title Great Austrians . The last volume 22 appeared in 1987.

After 1945 the Austrian Academy of Sciences took over the processing of the basic work with short biographies and publishes it continuously as the " Austrian Biographical Lexicon 1815–1950 " (BLÖ).
