The school BRG Kepler , vulgo Kepler (gymnasium) , officially Bundesrealgymnasium Keplerstraße 1 Graz , an Austrian federal realgymnasium in Graz , is named after the physicist Johannes Kepler .

history

In the orphanage barracks (today Andräschule) a seven-class secondary school was founded in 1872. The following year the school was closed for three weeks due to a leaf disease . In 1889 there were parallel classes for the first time with 207 students in 1892. Since then there have been constant parallel classes.

In 1896 the state and the municipality decided to build a new school building on Keplerstrasse. The architect was Wilhelm von Rezori, who also planned the New University. After four years of construction, the new school building was opened on October 24, 1900. Now 482 students have been taught. The physics, chemistry and gymnastics halls were provided with electrical connections in 1907. In 1915 troops were quartered in the school building and the classes were relocated to the Sacred Heart Monastery , Joanneum and Vinzentinum. Due to the difficult teaching, the school year ended earlier. Three years later, with the end of the war, the school moved back into the school building. But that same year the school was closed for a month because of the flu. In 1927 the number of classes had risen from 12 (1922) to 16 and now there were annual ski courses.

After the annexation to the National Socialist Reich in 1938, the school became “3. State High School for Boys ”renamed. It was given the name "Kepler School" in 1942. In August 1943, air raid shelters were set up in the basement and from October 9th a permanent on-call service had to be present. In 1944, windows were shattered by bombs in the vicinity. Lessons had to be moved to Lichtenfelsgasse ( Bundesgymnasium and Bundesrealgymnasium Lichtenfels ). School operations were shut down in 1945 and Russian troops took up residence in the building. On October 8th, the school was reopened as the 3rd Bundesrealgymnasium. The schools “2. Bundesrealgymnasium "and" 3. BRG for girls ”were housed in the same school building. The new school type "Latin Realschule" was introduced in 1948, which included either Latin or French as the second foreign language in the 5th grade (= 9th grade ), and the Realschule now had fewer English lessons, but mathematics and descriptive geometry (DG) were expanded. After 13 years of multiple occupancy, the BRG Keplerstrasse had the school building to itself again in 1958. As part of the School Organization Act, group lessons in English were introduced in 1962 and the upper level was run as the "Natural Science Realgymnasium" or "Mathematical Realgymnasium". DG was reduced to the 7th and 8th grade.

Realgymnasium began in the school year 1963/1964. The central heating was completed in 1964. In 1967 the “Keplerspatzen” choir was founded. In 1971 it was the first school in Austria to offer IT lessons, at that time as an optional subject. In 1993 an OECD study certified that the BRG Kepler was of very good quality. In the same year the "Keplerspatzen" celebrated their 25th anniversary with a gala concert and the new gymnasiums were opened. The loft extension was completed in 1999 with new physics, chemistry, biology and IT halls and two halls for art education. In 2000 the school was the only one in Austria to have an observatory . In 2002 the first school website was put online.

classes

The school focuses on natural sciences and computer science . Afternoon care (for a fee) with a focus on learning support , social learning and creative leisure activities is offered.

Two gyms are available for physical education. The modern structure of this gymnasium is located under the playable courtyard and is also illuminated with daylight via light strips. Further sporting activities are possible as part of regular winter sports and summer sports weeks.

Participation in competitions

Since the 2007/2008 school year, volunteer teams from the school have been taking part in the Robocup . The training units take place in the free time of the students. But with the 2011/2012 school year, an elective subject "Robotics" will be offered. There the basics can be learned and trained for these competitions. In 2010 the students won three of four competitions at the AustrianOpen in Villach for the first time . Since 2010 at least three teams have qualified for the RoboCup World Championships each year; In 2012 top positions could also be achieved there.

Since the 2008/2009 school year, student teams have also been taking part in the First Lego League (FLL). The BRG Kepler takes part in the Kangaroo of Mathematics and in the Mathematical School 5 Combat. The school also took part in the youth rapid chess championship.

organization

In the 2018/19 school year there are 27 classes with a total of around 700 students. 79 teachers worked at the school. Franz Riegler has been running the grammar school since autumn 2012 as the successor to Wolfgang Pickl.

particularities

The BRG Kepler is the only school in Austria with a permanently installed observatory . It was put into operation in 2000 and is mainly intended for use by students. However, there are also public tours and lectures (by arrangement). In April 2009, on the occasion of the International Year of Astronomy 2009, a festive event took place 400 Years of Astronomy: A Festival for Johannes Kepler with lectures, theater, choral music and readings of original texts by Johannes Kepler.

In the so-called Kepler space a permanent museum to Johannes Kepler is set up, which among other things, a walk, mirrored icosahedron and having a laser-planet-harp. Both the school observatory and the Kepler room have been participants in the ORF Long Night of Museums since 2009 . The Grazer Keplerspatzen school choir, founded in 1968, enjoys a high level of recognition through performances at home and abroad. Through this choir, the school was also awarded the Styrian School Prize Meistersinger 2011, 2012.
