A so-called B Jumbo is a six-axle and partially low-floor passenger wagon converted from old four-axle standard wagons and built for the first time in Switzerland for the BLS Lötschbergbahn .

Procurement criteria

Because the BLS head of the from December 2004, S-Bahn Bern has taken over, it took time for this additional rolling stock to the BLS RBDe 565 - trains for the S-Bahn enhance traffic. These vehicles still have a service life of 15 to 20 years, which is why they were equipped with a low-floor intermediate car, which is also designed for this duration.

The criteria were cost-effectiveness, storage space, heating, ventilation, a closed toilet system and disabled access. Thanks to these advantages, the trains can approach the BLS RABe 525 comfort level.

By using the noise-reduced bogies of the standard car I, which are no longer required, costs could be saved. The price of the prototype - the car has about Fr. be 1.2 million.

So that the car does not have to be completely rebuilt, one half of a standard car I was installed at both ends of the intermediate car.

prototype

The prototype with the company number 50 63 22-33 600-5 was put into operation in 2003, the difference to the series version is the slightly different paintwork and the roof shape, which is due to the fact that the low-floor compartment consists of a lower box part of an EW I. consists. Only the joint with Jakobs bogie was rebuilt. Accordingly, two EW I were required for the construction (B 50 63 20-33 891 and 895), one EW I is sufficient for the series version.

features

  • Power supply via on-board converter
  • Swivel sliding doors from Bode, analogous to BLS RABe 525
  • Heating via vertical side channels in the wall with air outlet at seat height
  • Ventilation for a minimum of 50 air changes via the ceiling duct, from 2007–12 air conditioning
  • Transition, joint and transition bridge analogous to BLS RABe 525 , double bellows with sound insulation
  • Illumination by means of two light strips on the ceiling
  • Transition doors as revolving doors for the best sound insulation
  • Seating as in BLS RABe 525
  • closed toilet (prototype B 600 only from 2012)

Series execution and use

In the years 2003 and 2004, the remaining 15 series intermediate cars were delivered, most EW I-cars in the 565 BLS RBDe - commuter trains peeled off. For a particularly well-frequented circuit of the S3, two of these intermediate cars were initially arranged in a composition. In the 2007 timetable all 5 compositions of the S3 Mon-Fri consisted of RBDe - B-Lego - B-Jumbo - ABt. Because these wagons have proven themselves, BLS has reordered another 10 wagons (616-625), which went into operation from June 2007. These cars are air-conditioned and were used in the first year (2007) for the RE Lötschberg. As a prototype, the first production car (601) was given the same air conditioning system on the roof. All other cars were also retrofitted with an air conditioning system from 2009 and given new numbers according to TSI (50 85 22-35 600 to 630), the last being the prototype 600 in early 2012. By December 2011, 22 of the 31 cars were for the S2 and S3 in the formation RBDe - 2 x B-Jumbo - ABt planned, the remaining cars were used on the S4, S6 and S51 or were in reserve / maintenance. Since December 2011 the S2 has been running with six compositions of two B-Jumbo each. The remaining wagons will be used on S3, S31, S4 and S6 until the double-decker trains are delivered, and some compositions with a B-Jumbo drove in additional morning trains or serve as a reserve.

The Jumbos have been used on the S2, S4, S51 and S52 of the Bern S-Bahn since December 2015. There are also deployments on various BLS Regio and RegioExpress lines as well as on additional trains during rush hour in the S-Bahn network.

Variations

Other railway companies have also taken up the idea of these low-floor intermediate cars and ordered them. The five wagons of Regionalverkehr Mittelland (RM) now also belong to BLS through a merger, but they still had the red RM paintwork until 2012. The only wagon outside of the BLS is currently the B 302 (B 50 35 22-33 302 ex EW I Zwischenwagen 302 , new NVR number 50 85 22-35 631-2) of the Transports Régionaux Neuchâtelois , which, like the BLS, is in an NPZ is used.
