Babička is a hit that was sung by Karel Gott and reached the top 20 in the German charts . It is one of God's most famous songs.

Origin and content

The song was written by Bernd Sichter together with Ralph Siegel and produced by the latter. The text is about the grandmother ( Babička in Czech ) of the protagonist and what she did for him when she was a child. So she could tell stories, bake and much more. The refrain, which is in major while the stanzas are in minor, is: “Singing, cooking, dancing, laughing, making you happy / that was Babicka / stealing horses, peeling apples and telling stories / that was Babicka / She comforted us at night / and put to bed well / we loved her and liked to play / with our Babicka. ”At the end of the song, the grandmother's death is reported, with the music being much quieter and slower. In the refrain, however, the tempo is increased again, following the example of Eastern European folk dances.

Publication and reception

Babička was published by Polydor in February 1979 . In 16 chart weeks, the single reached number 20, its highest chart listing in Germany. The song is also featured on numerous compilations .

In 1979 , Gott appeared twice on the ZDF hit parade with the song . He sang it for the first time on April 2, 1979 (seventh place) and on May 4, 1979 (fourth place). In the following three editions, Karel Gott was placed with the song until August 6, 1979 (fifth, eighth and twelve), but was not present in the show. In the super hit parade Schlager, which you won't forget on October 27, 1983, he sang it again.

In the MDR show Die Schlager of the Month , Babička was able to prevail in the “Evergreen of the Month” category in an audience vote against Sag ihr auch ( Gerd Christian ) and Blue Bayou ( Paola Felix ) and thus became “Evergreen of the Month - April 2019 ".
