Baboon Islands is a group of several inland islands of the Gambia River in the West African state of Gambia .

geography

The crescent-shaped main island, approximately 7.5 km long and 0.5 km wide, is located 19 kilometers downstream from the city of Janjanbureh . The 585 hectare archipelago includes four other larger islands and two small islets. The predominant type of vegetation is tropical rainforest , here in the form of a gallery forest .

The islands are part of the River Gambia National Park , which continues along the banks of the river. In this sanctuary, on Baboon Islands, chimpanzees were reintroduced into the wild in 1979 that had previously been raised in the Abuko Nature Reserve . To protect animals and visitors, entry to the islands is not permitted, exceptions are only possible with official approval. Even the circumnavigation by boat was drastically restricted in 1998. The island got its name because of baboons , a subspecies of the baboons , which are endemic there.
