bachelor thesis
The bachelor thesis is also called bachelor thesis or bachelor thesis (in English bachelor's thesis ). In international parlance, it is understood to mean an academic work that is written by students at the end of a bachelor's degree .
The amount of work to write a bachelor thesis depends on the task, but is generally comparatively less extensive than a master thesis after a subsequent master’s course, if only for reasons of time .
With the successful bachelor thesis, the student proves that he is able to independently write a scientific paper under the supervision of a university professor after the successful study. The Bachelor thesis is similar in many respects to other theses .
The bachelor thesis is called a “dissertation” in the United Kingdom , “paper”, “project” or “essay” in the Anglo-American region, and very rarely also “senior thesis” if it is a long academic paper. In addition, the one to two-year postgraduate Bachelor With Honors / Baccalaureatus Cum Honore course is offered in Australia and Canada , which usually requires a long empirical scientific work, which is de jure referred to as a "thesis".
General
The academic bachelor's degree is usually awarded with a university examination . In Germany, this final examination of a Bachelor’s degree usually consists of
- a part accompanying the course,
- the thesis,
- the final oral examination (at some universities )
Bachelor programs are regulated differently at universities and (technical) colleges in the German-speaking area. Writing a bachelor thesis is not required everywhere. Studies are regulated at the national level (Austria) or at the level of the federal states (Germany) or cantons (Switzerland) by university and (technical) college laws and at the level of the educational institutions by the respective curricula as well as study and examination regulations.
In order to ensure quality, the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs in Germany stipulates a mandatory final thesis (Bachelor thesis) "with which the ability is demonstrated to deal independently with a problem from the respective subject using scientific methods within a specified period of time."
The bachelor thesis is usually either the last exam or the penultimate exam before the final oral exam.
Bachelor graduates can also start their professional life without acquiring a further degree or be directly admitted to a doctorate by means of an aptitude assessment procedure.
scope
For the bachelor thesis in Germany, a scope of 6 to 12 ECTS points must be provided.
In bachelor's degree programs in fine arts - consecutive study programs award the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) - the scope of processing for the bachelor thesis can be up to 20 ECTS points in justified exceptional cases.
procedure
Depending on the university, a bachelor thesis must be registered with the responsible examination office at the appropriate deadlines or at the start of processing . Thus, a supervisory relationship between the work is issuing university teachers and students founded.
After a deadline set in the respective examination regulations, the thesis must be submitted to the examination office. At some universities the deadline can be extended once.
If the bachelor thesis is the last examination, then - if the bachelor thesis is sufficiently graded - the bachelor certificate and thus the award of the academic degree, for example a “Bachelor of Science” or “Bachelor of Arts” in the respective subject. This also concludes the course.
Some faculties or chairs give their students instructions for this; these often also contain binding regulations for citing (including citing Internet sources) and other formal requirements (line spacing, margins, minimum and / or maximum number of pages, etc.).
When preparing the bachelor thesis, advisors for scientific work can help.
Austria
According to Section 35 (12) of the 2005 Higher Education Act and Section 52 (2) (7) of the 2002 University Act , bachelor's theses are independent written or artistic work to be completed in the course of a course.
