Life

childhood and education

According to his own statements, Bachi Valishvili wanted to be an actor from childhood. During his school days he came into contact with the director Temur Khutsishvili from the sixth grade. He set up a small theater group at Valishvili's school. Valishvili and four classmates belonged to this group, which also built a small stage together.

Originally, Valishvili wanted to pursue a professional career as a theater actor. However, his family refused this career aspiration. Valishvili then began studying psychology, and later applied to study journalism at the state Ilia University in Tbilisi . At this college Valishvili was able to pursue acting in parallel and he met the experienced actor Otar Egadze. He then joined the local theater group and appeared in a few small repertoire pieces.

Bachi Valishvili has been engaged to his girlfriend since summer 2019.

Valishvili claims to have started studying philosophy in 2020.

Success with "When we danced"

Valishvili achieved international fame in 2019 through his participation in the feature film When we danced by Levan Akin . In the Swedish-Georgian cinema production he took on the role of the charismatic and carefree Irakli, a budding dancer at the Georgian National Ballet in Tbilisi, who becomes the object of the lust of his competing fellow student Merab (played by Levan Gelbakhiani ). Valishvili was discovered by a casting agent on Facebook . He then sent more pictures that led to test shots. Due to the homoerotic theme, Valishvili was initially unsure whether he should take on the role of Irakli. Spurred on by friends and other factors, he accepted the offer and later viewed his involvement in the film as a kind of activism. The process of making as we danced lasted for one and a half years. During this time he made friends with his co-actor Levan Gelbakhiani and both supported each other during the filming.

After the release of When We Danced at the Cannes International Film Festival 2019 , the film received a lot of praise from the specialist critics as well as from the two main actors. At the same time, Akin's directorial work was submitted as a Swedish entry for the 2020 Academy Awards in the Best International Film category . In contrast, the premiere of the film in Valishvili's homeland Georgia in November 2019 was accompanied by protests in which 27 people were arrested. Other Georgian cinemas in which the film was shown had to be placed under police protection. Homophobic ultra-nationalist groups called for a boycott of Als Wir danced auf, while the Orthodox Church in Georgia described the film as unacceptable. Valishvili himself publicly supported the subject of the film together with his co-actor Levan Gelbakhiani and spoke out against the homophobia and hatred in his home country. He attributed negative reactions to illiteracy , a lack of awareness and a lack of sexual education in Georgia, as well as the fact that the country had not rid itself of the Soviet past. Valishvili received support from his family during this time.
