Swedish Academy in Backåkra

Backåkra is a farm between Löderup and Sandhammaren in the municipality of Ystad in the Swedish province of Skåne . It is located in a heather and forest area, below which there are sand dunes , which are separated by a pine forest on the land side .

Backåkra goes back to a homestead . In 1957, the then UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjöld acquired the farm and renovated it to use it as a summer residence. The Swedish hiking association Svenska Turistföreningen took over the farm after Hammarskjöld's death in 1961 and set up a museum there that shows documents from his work at the United Nations. The south wing of the courtyard is used as the summer residence of the members of the Swedish Academy .
