Bad Dürkheimer Hochbenn

Hochbenn is the name of a vineyard near Bad Dürkheim ( Rhineland-Palatinate ). Their vineyards cover 51.8 hectares .

Location, climate, soils

The Hochbenn belongs to the Palatinate cultivation area , here again to the Mittelhaardt-Deutsche Weinstrasse area . It is a single layer that belongs to the large Hochmess area. It is located entirely within the Bad Dürkheim district. The altitude ranges from about 140 to 180  m above sea level. NHN ; the terrain here is 20% sloping and 80% flat.

The soils of the Hochbenn consist of loam , clay , marl and weathered limestone. The lee of the Palatinate Forest in the west protects the Hochbenn from precipitation.

Surname

The first mention of the name was in 1381 "in den Benden". The name is derived from the Middle High German word "biunde", which denoted a fenced area that was intended for specific cultivation purposes.

The name of the vineyard is said to have helped the poet Gottfried Benn to prove his non-Jewish ancestry during the National Socialist era , which was doubted because of his surname: After he found a bottle with the inscription "Bad Dürkheimer Hochbenn" on the Having seen the map, he is said to have contacted the city administration of Bad Dürkheim and asked for information about the origin of the name, which the city administration also made available to him.
