Bad Hopfreben in Schoppernau

Bad Hopfreben ( 1022  m above sea level ) was a spa and guest house (today only a holiday home) between Schoppernau and Schröcken and is located in the Hopfreben district of the municipality of Schoppernau in Vorarlberg ( Austria ).

history

The healing spring of Bad Hopfreben has been known since the 17th century. Hop grapes originally belonged to Weingarten Monastery . In 1713 the spa was sold to the then pastor of Schröcken, Christian Jochum, who in turn resold it in 1718 to the pastor of Schoppernau, Franz Thumb (1683–1760). In 1719 pastor Thumb built new bathing huts and in 1737 a bathing house was built and a bathing booklet was published. The high point of therapeutic bathing is said to have been in the 17th and 18th centuries. Bad Hopfreben was destroyed by a storm in 1787 and had to be rebuilt. After the climax of the therapeutic baths, Bad Hopfreben became a popular summer resort . In 1899, the building in its current appearance was created according to plans by Johann Bertolini . In the 20th century, the city of Bregenz used Bad Hopfreben as a holiday home. Today the house is privately run as a holiday home with 60 beds.

Bathing and healing spring

The healing springs are cold sulfur springs, similar to those in Bad Haslach in Dornbirn or in the sulfur bath in Hohenems or in Bad Kehlegg in Dornbirn. The bathers were brought into contact with the heated healing water in large wooden tubs . It was separated according to the stands . Clergy and so-called “notables” separated from ordinary people , men separated from women. It was also possible for notables to take the therapeutic bath in their own room.
