Badr Ahmed Mohamed Abdelatty ( Arabic بدر عبد العاطي, DMG Badr ʿAbd al-ʿĀṭī ; * February 8, 1966 in Assiut ) is an Egyptian diplomat .

Life

He studied political science at the University of Cairo , where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1987. In 1989 he worked as a research assistant at the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies in Cairo . He joined the Egyptian Foreign Ministry in 1989 and worked there as an attaché until 1991. From 1991 to 1995 he was the Third Secretary at the Egyptian Embassy in Israel in Tel Aviv , where he was responsible for domestic affairs in Israel and the Middle East peace process . In 1995 he returned to Cairo as Second Secretary in the Foreign Ministry. He worked there in the office of the Deputy Foreign Minister for Regional Economic Cooperation in the Middle East. In 1996 he was a member of the Egyptian delegation to the Economic Conference for the Near and Middle East and North Africa in Cairo. In the same year he obtained a Master of Arts in International Relations from Cairo University, where he dealt with Egyptian foreign policy on the Palestine question.

In 1997 he went to the embassy in Japan in Tokyo as second secretary , where he was responsible for African affairs, the Middle East peace process and Iran . In 2001 he became first secretary in the cabinet of the Egyptian foreign minister, where he was again appointed to African affairs and the Middle East peace process. In 2003 he also worked as a lecturer at the Nasser Military Academy in Cairo. At the same time he did his Ph.D. in international relations at the University of Cairo.

In 2003 he became Political Counselor at the Embassy in Washington, DC in the United States . His field of work was African affairs and the United States Congress .

In 2007 he became head of the Palestine Department in the Egyptian Foreign Ministry until he went to the Egyptian Embassy in Brussels as Deputy Head of Mission in 2008 . In 2012 he became Deputy Foreign Minister with responsibility for the European Union , Western Europe and the Union for National Coordination in the Mediterranean. In June 2013 he also became spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In September 2015 he became the Egyptian ambassador to Germany . During his time as ambassador to Germany, he publicly criticized Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International , which he accused of living in an ivory tower and lacking credibility. The organizations had criticized the human rights situation in Egypt.

In October 2019, Khaled Galal Abdelhamid succeeded him as ambassador to Germany.

Personal

Badr Abdelatty is married and has three children. In addition to Arabic, he also speaks English and French .
