Giovanni Andrea Moneglia
Giovanni Andrea Moneglia (also Moniglia ) (born March 22, 1625 in Florence , † September 21, 1700 in Prato ) was an Italian doctor , playwright and librettist of the Baroque .
Life
Moneglia was first educated by Jesuits in his hometown before continuing his studies in Pisa , where he completed his studies in medicine and philosophy on April 2, 1645. Around 1649 he was accepted into the Accademia degli Apatisti . Cardinal Giancarlo de 'Medici recommended Moneglia for a chair in medicine at the University of Pisa, but he did not get it. On March 15, 1656, Moneglia was appointed doctor to Cardinal Medici with a salary of 10 scudi per month. During this time Moneglia's activity began as a theater poet for the cardinal.
On January 4, 1663, Moneglia accompanied Cardinal Giovan Carlo de 'Medici to the villa in Castello, where the rehearsals for his new civic drama La vedova, ovvero Amore vuole ingegno were to take place. The cardinal, his great sponsor, died on January 23, 1663, so the performance did not take place.
At the request of Leopoldo de 'Medici , Moneglia wrote the libretto Semiramide , which was set to music by Antonio Cesti . Originally commissioned for the wedding of Archduke Sigismund von Habsburg , which should have taken place in September 1665. Due to his unexpectedly early death, the opera was only performed in Vienna on June 9, 1667 in the court theater .
For the wedding of Johann Georg III. , Elector of Saxony, with Anne Sophia , Crown Princess of Denmark, which took place on October 9, 1666, he was commissioned to write the libretto for the opera Il teseo , which Pietro Andrea Ziani set to music . With the opera, the opera house on the Taschenberg was reopened in Dresden on January 27, 1667 .
On October 22nd, 1667 he went on a trip to Germany accompanied by Prince Cosimo . A diary in verse has been preserved from this journey.
In 1681 he received a chair in medicine at the University of Pisa . Ten years later his son Niccolò Maria died, in July 1692 his wife, Ottavia di Sebastiano Morando. In the same year he was accepted into the Accademia dell'Arcadia under the name Nardilo Azonio .
The Moneglia died on September 21, 1700 in his home in Prato near Florence.
