Jonathan Ira Lovett (born August 17, 1982 in Woodbury , New York ) is an American podcaster , comedian and former speechwriter . Together with Jon Favreau and Tommy Vietor, he is co-founder of Crooked Media and moderator of the podcasts Pod Save America and Lovett or Leave It, which appear there regularly . He worked as a speechwriter for Hillary Clinton when she was a US Senator, and with Favreau and Vietor for Barack Obama in his first term as President of the United States .

Life

Lovett grew up on Long Island as the child of Jewish parents of Ukrainian descent and attended Syosset High School. In 2004 he graduated from Williams College, Massachusetts in mathematics. His thesis, entitled Rotating Linkages in a Normed Plane , was published in the American Mathematical Monthly journal . After graduating, he worked as a stand-up comedian in New York for a year.

Career as a political speechwriter

In 2004 he volunteered for John Kerry's presidential campaign . After writing a statement for him, he was offered an internship. He then worked for a short time for the office of US Senator Jon Corzine . In 2005 he was hired as an assistant to Sarah Hurwitz, who worked as a speechwriter for Hillary Clinton . Lovett wrote for Clinton until he was defeated in the fight for the Democratic presidential candidacy against Barack Obama.

After Clinton's defeat, Lovett won an anonymous speechwriting contest for Obama in the White House. He worked there closely for 3 years with David Axelrod and the later co-founder of the joint company Crooked Media, Jon Favreau . He primarily wrote Obama's speeches on financial reform and don't ask, don't tell .

According to his own statements, Jon Lovett held the first same-sex marriage in the White House before the Obama administration officially endorsed same-sex marriages.

Career as a screenwriter and podcaster

Screenwriter

In 2011, Lovett left the White House for California to pursue a career as a screenwriter. The reasons he gave was to give his creativity more freedom and to want to concentrate more on his work as a comedian again. Together with Josh Gad and Jason Wiener he developed and produced the series 1600 Penn , which was discontinued after only one season due to low ratings. He then worked as a writer and producer on the HBO series The Newsroom .

Crooked Media

Starting in May 2016, Lovett, along with his former White House colleagues Jon Favreau and Tommy Vietor, hosted the Keepin 'it 1600 political podcast on sports site The Ringer . The podcast was supposed to accompany the 2016 presidential election, but not be continued beyond that. After Hillary Clinton's defeat by Donald Trump, Lovett, Favreau and Vietor wanted to become politically active again without having to leave LA. They subsequently founded the liberal media company Crooked Media with its flagship podcast pod Save America . As a result, other podcasts were successfully launched, many of which are regularly co-moderated by Lovett. It is particularly characteristic for the humorous loosening up of the podcast.

Since 2017, Lovett has hosted the discussion podcast Lovett or Leave It , which is usually recorded in front of a live audience in LA. There have also been national and international tours by Pod Save America and Lovett or Leave It for some time .

Lovett is also involved in Crooked Media's Vote Save America project, which is about contributing to civic education and encouraging citizens to vote.

Private

Lovett is openly gay. He has been dating investigative journalist, lawyer and author Ronan Farrow since 2011 , who was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2018 for his revelations in the Harvey-Weinstein scandal in the New Yorker . In his 2019 book, Catch and Kill , Farrow announced the engagement to Lovett. He had proposed to him in a rough version of the book.
