Baguida (alternative spellings Bagida and Bagid ) is a small town on the central Atlantic coast in Togo . The place belongs to the prefecture of Golfe in the region of Maritime . It is located 13 kilometers east of the state capital Lomé on the Gulf of Guinea and is part of the metropolitan region of Lomés. Baguida became famous as the first capital of Togo (1884–1886) under German colonial rule. The national road 5 from Lomé to Cotonou ( Benin ) runs through the city.

Because of its seaside location and extensive beaches, the city is now a preferred residential area in the metropolitan area of the capital. The place lives from tourism and houses a large number of hotels and guest houses.

The settlement history of the city goes back to the end of the 17th century. Sani, a hunter from neighboring Bé (now a district of Lomé) is considered to be the founder of the place. He and his descendants grew grain , tubers and pulses . The fertility of the area caught the interest of colonialists in the 19th century .

As early as 1857, the first German trading companies established factories on the slave coast , which from 1882 was connected to the German Empire by regular steamship services on the Woermann line. On July 5, 1884, Plakko, the staff bearer (= deputy) of King Mlapa III, who had probably already died at this point, and the Reich Commissioner Gustav Nachtigal signed a " protection treaty " in Baguida, declaring individual places in what is now Togo a " German protected area " were ("King Mlapa grants all German subjects and fellow patrons who live in his country protection and free trade and never wants to grant other nations more facilities, favors or protection than are granted to German subjects.") The place of treaty Baguida was from 1884 until 1886 the first capital of the German colony Togo .

The city of Stadtbergen in the Augsburg district has been twinning with Baguida since 1986 .
