Bahn unterm Hammer is the title of a documentary by directors Herdolor Lorenz and Leslie Franke about the planned privatization of Deutsche Bahn in 2007.

The film shows how the quality of rail traffic in Germany has declined in the course of rail privatization since 1994: thinning of the rail network, massive closure of train stations and ticket offices every year, investment backlog. The interviewees from Lorenz and Franke - mainly scientists, journalists, railway employees and local politicians - attribute this development to the partial privatization of capital planned at the time by Deutsche Bahn: In order to make the company more profitable and thus more interesting for potential investors, costs would be saved and thus balance sheets embellished - at the expense of rail traffic in the area as well as at the expense of the workforce. Billionaire graves like the new Nuremberg – Ingolstadt line should suggest a willingness to invest and create positive headlines. The film lets those involved have their say who fundamentally reject rail privatization because, firstly, it would mean additional costs and disadvantages for taxpayers and because, from their point of view, the railways should not serve profit purposes any more than public educational institutions, for example.

The film contrasts these undesirable developments and gloomy prognoses with changes in the ownership of the railways in other countries: While the British rail privatization had catastrophic consequences, the Swiss made a referendum in 1987 in favor of “land development instead of high-speed”. Public passenger transport in Switzerland is presented as a successful example of a state-owned company, with much greater punctuality of the means of transport, integral timing and at the same time significantly lower state investments compared to Germany: "Deutsche Bahn does everything to get listed on the stock exchange - the Schweizer Bahn does everything for its customers. ”Accordingly, people in Switzerland took the train more than twice as much in 2006 as in Germany.

Bahn unterm Hammer was created with the support of ver.di , attac , BUND , Robin Wood , Naturfreunde , Umkehr , Globale07 and Bahn von unten .
