The Bahnbetriebswerk Passau was a Bahnbetriebswerk (Bw) affiliated to the main station in Passau , which was established in 1861 by the AG der Bayerischen Ostbahnen . From the Deutsche Bahn it was decommissioned in 2000 and has since been owned by the Passauer Eisenbahnfreunde (PEF).

history

The main station in Passau, with its depot at that time and the associated facilities, was opened as a terminal station in 1850 , the 1.5 km long route over the Inn was put into operation on September 1, 1861, creating a connection to the Austrian Empress Elisabeth Railway to Wels . Passau was operated as a border station by two railway companies and created a continuous connection from Frankfurt am Main to Vienna .

In 1865, the AG der Bayerische Ostbahnen established a railway connection to the Danube port at the town hall , which it transferred to the Royal Bavarian State Railway on January 1, 1876 .

The depot was moved to Haitzingerstraße in 1906, moving 150,000 m² of earth. A twenty- space roundhouse with a two-track workshop extension was built together with a six-track workshop with a transfer table. This step was necessary because additional branch lines were being built from Passau. Before that, the facilities of the depot had been expanded several times over the years.

Many steam locomotives were based in Passau until after the Second World War . Then they were gradually replaced by diesel locomotives.

The depot was also responsible for the section from Obernzell to Wegscheid , the only rack railway operated by the Royal Bavarian State Railways. The PtzL 3/4 (BR 97.1) was therefore only stationed in Passau.

On the cogwheel route, the first attempts were made with the VT 98.9 rail bus as a steep-road vehicle in friction mode. From 1964 to 1965, the VT 97 901 was a rail bus for cogwheel operation. The Federal Railroad was also home to the rail-road omnibus or the V 100 for tests on the cogwheel route .

Decline

After passenger traffic was discontinued on several lines and the Obernzell – Wegscheid line was completely shut down, the depot was moved to Nuremberg through the dissolution of the Regensburg Federal Railway Directorate . The last independent locomotives in Passau were handed over to other offices in 1978.

The last renovation took place in 1976, including the demolition of the roundhouse and building a hall for rail buses and a workshop.

The Passau depot was finally closed in 2000.

Passau Railway Friends

After the dissolution by Deutsche Bahn, the Passauer Eisenbahnfreunde (PEF) acquired the entire depot facility from DB Services Immobilien , including the former VT hall with three tracks and the passenger car hall with two tracks and the associated track apron, as well as buildings and workshops. The association initially carried out some renovation and refurbishment work on the site and has been taking care of the maintenance of the facilities ever since.

The Passauer Eisenbahnfreunde operate a model railway in the basement of the Passau main station, which has the entire track system of the Passau border station in the state in the mid-1950s. The Passau depot at the time of the Federal Railroad is also reproduced here on a 1:87 scale.
