The Draugystė station ( Lithuanian Draugystės ležinkelio stotis ) is one of the freight stations of the Lithuanian railway company Lietuvos ležinkeliai in the seaport city of Klaipėda ( German Memel ). It is used for international freight traffic . This is where the shuttle container trains “ Vikingas ”, “ Merkurijus ”, “ Saulė ” and others arrive .
history
The station was opened in 1986 for the Mukran – Klaipėda ferry route. In 2006 the German company EPG Eisenbahn- und Bauplanungsgesellschaft GmbH ( Erfurt ) prepared a study on the possible renewal . From 2010 to June 2013 the station was renewed. An additional exit towards Pagėgiai ( Tauragė district ) has been set up. This means that longer trains can now be served. They can have a loading weight of 6,000 tons. The handling capacity of the station was increased from 7 million to up to 15 million tons of freight per year.
