The station is served by Southeastern trains that run from Charing Cross and London Bridge to Dartford . To the east of the station, the Greenwich Line runs through an approximately 900 meter long tunnel that crosses under the National Maritime Museum and leads to the nearest station, Maze Hill .

The Docklands Light Railway also reaches the station through a tunnel. This begins on the Isle of Dogs , crosses under the Thames , follows Greenwich High Road and, after crossing under the station area, comes back to the surface. The DLR station is located west of the railway platforms. Immediately afterwards a viaduct begins, which follows the river Ravensbourne to the terminus Lewisham .

history

Greenwich railway station is one of the oldest in all of London, and the London and Greenwich Railway is even considered the oldest suburban railway in the world. A massive brick viaduct with 878 arches connected Greenwich to London. From February 8, 1836, the route initially led from Spa Road in Bermondsey to Deptford . Almost ten months later, on December 14, 1836, it was extended to London Bridge Station . On December 24, 1838, the railroad finally reached Greenwich. The station building erected at that time is still standing today and is one of the oldest preserved in the world.

The railway company could not agree with Greenwich Hospital about the course of the further route, so that Greenwich remained the terminus for more than forty years. The trains therefore had to make a detour via Lewisham. The tunnel to Maze Hill was only opened on February 1, 1878. The opening of the DLR route between Crossharbour and Lewisham took place on November 20, 1999.
